Should You Stay or Should You Go

Definitely go to the Burr Oak tomorrow night, Friday, May 31, as Madison’s own The Dead Johnnys pay tribute to the English punk rock band, The Clash.  Jim Goronson, one of the main members of the Madison band joins the Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about their show and the musical odyssey that made the English punk pioneers a “clash-ical” act.  Tomorrow night’s lineup includes The Blue Herons and the Broken Boards.  This is your chance to rock the Casbah, or at least the Burr Oak.

Sulma Arias, Executive Director of People’s Action Institute, talks about a recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report that shows how COVID resulted in business failure of smaller grocery suppliers, to the advantage of the large chains such as Kroger and Walmart, who have held consumer prices high for continued greed and record profits.

Queens of Destruction Showcases Women of Silent Film Comedy

If you think of classic silent film comedy stars, chances are your mind will turn to Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy or Harold Lloyd.  But what about Florence Turner, Texas Guinan, Edna “Billy” Foster or Tsura Aoki?  Men did not have a monopoly on early twentieth century slapstick humor.  The next installment of Duck Soup Cinema at Madison’s Capitol Theatre features the “Queens of Destruction,” a new compilation of female comedians hell-bent on toppling gender stereotypes.  Maggie Hennefeld joined the Monday Buzz by phone to tell us about these early pioneers of silent comedy. Hennefeld is a professor of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota, and co-curated the “Queens of Destruction” program.
